So Jason Russell of Invincible Children goes crazy and you see his hot butt on TMZ and he pounds the cement in a psychotic breakdown. Does that make Joseph Kony less of a war criminal? Does that make children forced to become soldiers less war crimey? Does it stop them from being mutilated? Does it stop homes from being destroyed, women from being raped, parents from being killed, lives from being destroyed forever? Does it make the desire to enforce international law any less noble, no matter how gimmicky a device might be employed to get regular people to pay attention?

Mike Daisey lied to us about his report regarding Foxconn’s labor conditions at their factory in China, which makes products for Apple. So the kids that work there are 18 instead of 13. Does that mean the conditions there are any less deplorable? Does that mean any of us would want to work that job, even if it is better than working on the farm like the old days in China? Does it mean any less suicides occurred? Or that Tim Cook refuses to talk to journalists about labor issues even though Apple takes the charges very seriously?

These questions are annoying. They should be. But we can laugh and look at oh, how the mighty have fallen. Attention is a bitch. It’s a double-edged sword and cuts deep. Jason and Mike’s careers are likely destroyed. But that doesn’t mean that the cause they worked for wasn’t more important. But laughing at a crazy man running around sunny Pacific Beach in the buff or reveling in a discredited writer (SEE I TOLD YOU SO!!) is easy, because it allows us to return to our regular lives, where we don’t have to look directly at the faces of those who suffer.

Now let me go post this to my twitter feed on my iphone, which was assembled by someone who won’t make in their lifetime what I could make in a year. And let me go to sleep in the cozy borough of Manhattan, one of the most privileged places in the world, free from dreams about a jungle shithole where a kid cries himself to sleep at night because he will never see his family again.
